Liszt was the master of transcription - the art of editing another composer's work. Operas and songs were among his favorites to edit, especially Schubert's songs. Liszt met Schubert at a young age while studying piano in Vienna and would remain devoted to this composer throughout his life. At the age of 16, Liszt moved to Paris, and after several years of smoking, drinking, and meeting interesting people such as Heinrich Heine and Victor Hugo, he became involved in the "flying trapeze" piano playing school famous for raising of the level of piano technique. While Liszts' many transcriptions of Schubert's songs range from the contemplative to the joyous, the spectacular layering and richness of the music make it a wonderful challenge for any pianist to play.

Evelina has a special relationship with Schubert's songs and with Liszt. Growing up in Moscow, she often played Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin from her parents' record collection, and she hoped to one day sing these cycles herself. Only in Amsterdam did Evelina develop her mezzo voice with an opera teacher to touch upon this repertoire. Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert songs bring her as close as possible to her childhood singing dream, and she has played them on the piano on many occasions. One of these, the Liszt Competition in Utrecht, proved to be a transformative turning point, making Liszt even more of a companion in Evelina's life.

Evelina plays Gretchen am Spinnrade, a song by Schubert inspired by a Goethe poem, a selection of the Müllerlieder and a selection of other Liszt transcriptions.
